MLB’s Statcast tracks “framing runs” as a real metric. Youth softball doesn’t have that infrastructure everywhere yet. But the principle holds at every level.

What to Look For in a Program

- Do they run catching-specific practices? Not just drills — actual instruction from someone who understands the position.
- Do they track defensive metrics? Even simple things like “blocked ball percentage” or “pop time averages” show the program takes the position seriously.
- Do they have a recovery and mobility component for catchers? Hip work, knee care, and flexibility aren’t optional.
- Do college coaches see your catcher play defense? If the answer is “we mostly DH her,” that’s a red flag about how the program develops the position.
Catching isn’t a consolation position for players who can’t hit. It’s the most demanding job on the field, and in New England, it’s almost universally undercoached.
